Damming

Though dams help prevent loss of life and property that are caused by flooding, and have other benefits like building a reservoir for water storage, I think that they are bad for our enviorment.  In building each dam you take away many natural habitats of animals. The building of the Three Gorges Dam will affect many species including some endangered animals, water quality, and it increased the likelihood of earthquakes and mudslides in the area.Fish wont be able to travel upstream and populations of fish will decrease. In the area of the dam there are 47 different species of endangered animals that are being protected by the chinese law. The loss of forests where the dam is to be built will cause massive erosion and build of of sediment at the bottom of the river and the reservoir, which could lead to flooding upstream. The Yangtze river is polluted as it is, and with the building of this dam they will be destroying villages that will only add the to waters pollution. Nearly 2 million people had to move there homes because of the construction of this dam. Though the dam helps with flood control, I still don't think that saving few human lives that would be lost by a natural cause is worth all the negative impacts it has on the enviorment.  Also, due to less fertile land because of less money, China will loss money. China will have to import more grain from other countries in order for them to make up for the grain they will lose due to the construction of this dam. Though this is only one dam, I think that this is a perfect example of why we should stop building dams. We first of all be more cautious of where we are building monuments and cities, and we shouldn't build them close enough to rivers that flooding will destroy them. Yes, flooding and other natural disasters are unavoidable and they will happen, but by building things so close to rivers that are known to flood is simply a recipe for disaster.
