Fracking

1.What is the purpose of "fracking?
2.How is "fracking" done
3.Why are people concerned about "fracking?"

 1. Fracking is a way of getting natural gas out of the ground.
2.Fracking is when highly toxic chemicals and water are injected in to the ground to break up the rocks and to release the gas that is trapped.
3. People are concerned about fracking because there have been aquifers where contamination is visible and it is harshly impacting the water.

Damming

Though dams help prevent loss of life and property that are caused by flooding, and have other benefits like building a reservoir for water storage, I think that they are bad for our enviorment.  In building each dam you take away many natural habitats of animals. The building of the Three Gorges Dam will affect many species including some endangered animals, water quality, and it increased the likelihood of earthquakes and mudslides in the area.Fish wont be able to travel upstream and populations of fish will decrease. In the area of the dam there are 47 different species of endangered animals that are being protected by the chinese law. The loss of forests where the dam is to be built will cause massive erosion and build of of sediment at the bottom of the river and the reservoir, which could lead to flooding upstream. The Yangtze river is polluted as it is, and with the building of this dam they will be destroying villages that will only add the to waters pollution. Nearly 2 million people had to move there homes because of the construction of this dam. Though the dam helps with flood control, I still don't think that saving few human lives that would be lost by a natural cause is worth all the negative impacts it has on the enviorment.  Also, due to less fertile land because of less money, China will loss money. China will have to import more grain from other countries in order for them to make up for the grain they will lose due to the construction of this dam. Though this is only one dam, I think that this is a perfect example of why we should stop building dams. We first of all be more cautious of where we are building monuments and cities, and we shouldn't build them close enough to rivers that flooding will destroy them. Yes, flooding and other natural disasters are unavoidable and they will happen, but by building things so close to rivers that are known to flood is simply a recipe for disaster.

CO2 causing remperature rising

    1. The horizontal axis is showing the years from 1880~2010
    2. Present day is on the right
    3. Left side of vertical axis is showing degrees in farenheit and the right side of the vertical axis is showing CO2 in parts per million. The range of ferenheit is -1.0 degrees F ~ 1.0 degrees F. The range of CO2 in parts per million ranges from 280-380.
    4. No it does not say where the data is from.

Coal Mining Blog Post

The massive coal dust explosion in  West Virginia was caused by avoidance of safety rules and a methane ignition is what set it off. In the united states, each family who lost relatives in the explosion got 1.5million dollars. In china, the safety precautions were way lower and followed much less then in the united states. There wasn't even a monitering system. This particular mine was illegal and had been shut down and lost its license over a year ago. Each family of 17 victims of this mining accident recieved 10,000 yuan($1,577) for funeral expenses. Also, each dead miners family will recieve 660,000 yuan ($105,486.4) Gas explosions as well as fires and floods are really frequent in Chinas' coal mines. More accidents happen in Chinas' mines because they have far less safety precautions then we do in the USA. The difference between the compensation for american and chinese families is that the americans get far more more then the chinese do. Americans get $1.5 million opposed to china's  $105,486.4 plus funeral expenses.

No more cheap food!

China represents 20 percent of the world's population, and has only 7 percent of the world's productive, arable land.

in the United States, agricultural properties have risen in average value by 58 pecent over the last year.

I think that I am upset yet not surprised about the statistic from China. The fact that they have 20% of the ENTIRE WORLDS populatoi but only 7% of productive farm land is disturbing. That is just a lot of proof that they are majorly overpopulated and that they have too many people and not enough contribution to food, in my opinion.  Since there is continulously less and less farm land to grow food, it is going to start getting more and more expensive.

Dams (Current Event)

China would be benefitted because that 90% of the electricity would be going to China. However, the quality of the dam was questionable. They stopped the construction of the dam was because it would have flooded. The dam is also placed on an area that has many different kinds of life that would potentially be flooded. The dam would cause irreversible damage to burmas key river system,as long as rice patty farmers because it would stop the water flow. Groups in Burma, not only did they close the dam because of environmental impacts, displacement, and threats to cultural sites, but the dam is located a little less than 100 kilometers from a huge fault If there was an earthquake that were to weaken the dam, it would flood and kill thousands of people. The people who wrote the article clearly want the dam to be shut down and they think that dams are wrong. The websites mission is to close dams.
